The BBC to produce a new ‘Civilisation.’
Dear Tony Hall, Kim Shillinglaw,
The BBC will no doubt find great interest in the public’s response to a new production of ‘Civilisation.’ It is by what criteria that both a ‘Presenter’ and its ‘Content’ may be satisfactorily found will I think present the most challenging criteria. Perhaps, if as a tax payer who is happy to continue funding a notable public institution of world renown, offer some thoughts. Kenneth Clark’s groundbreaking series captured the imagination of the public in an era which had incrementally drifted from deference, in which Civilisation held on to this most splendid of British characteristics, giving to Clark an aura of distinction which by virtue assisted his ascension to the pinnacle of Western Art, thus both ‘Presenter AND Content’ effectively ‘danced upon the head of a pin.’The BBC acceded to an equally renown follow-up in a tribute to how Science contributed to the development of humanity in Jacob Bronowski’s ‘The Ascent of Man,’ where both ‘Presenter AND Content’ continued with its legacy after the same. These two programmes arguable reflect Western Civilisation’s greatest cultural explosions of creativity in The Renaissance and The Enlightenment to denote Art & Science. A third to facilitate a continuity would be a programme on The Reformation, to bestride the above to denote the religious with the secular, an ‘enclosed unit’ giving a directional indication to its ‘Presenter AND Content’ to also ‘dance upon the head of a pin.’
The criteria to determine both Presenter & Content may be discerned in the recent tribute which the Prime Minister paid to the legacy which Christianity has given to Britain, ie its secular institutions, which met with immediate vehemence from atheists and secularists which alludes to Lord Melvyn Bragg’s great defence of Christianity in 2011, when he remarked, ‘Christianity should be respected for its history and its contribution to mankind.’ ‘If you ask 20 of your friends how English and American democracy came about, none of them would say that Anglicanism or Protestantism had anything to do with it. But it was crucial to it! It isn’t difficult to prove in my opinion. In a sense, the impact of religion outside of the faith has been more significant than the spreading of the faith itself.’ Lord Bragg has inferred the 90% of Christianity.
The ‘secularists’ believe Art & Science came entirely as a result of humanism, creating all the infrastructure of society, in its great institutions and philosophical ideas, of freedom and democracy. However, they cannot deny that this great legacy, created in The Renaissance and The Enlightenment was also flanked by The Reformation, or Protestantism. It is off course true that the practise of Christianity especially of Church of England attendance has declined, which by perception, ( and one is being kind ) that Christianity affords say 10% as being relative to society but its legacy of secularism, ‘the impact of religion outside of the faith…’ is proportionally 90% greater!!!!!!! Thus the ‘Content’ of a new ‘Civilisation’ has been ‘wring fenced’ in this recent debate in Britain regarding the decline in the practise of Christianity, at its minimum, to its historic legacy at its premium. Thus a ‘Presenter’ whom can articulate how the practise of Christianity is directly linked Theologically to its legacy, will expose the identity of this new ‘Presenter,’ with the capacity to extrapolate that ‘secularism’ ie Art & Science is Christianity’s conclusive message, giving to Christianity 90% greater appeal!!!!!!!
Kenneth Clark benefited from an era of ‘deference’ which contributed to ‘Civilisation’ to become iconic, deservedly. What is much more at stake in finding a new ‘Presenter’ and its Contents resides in how such a new programme may enhance the stature of the BBC to dance upon the head of a pin also! (Not the same pin!)This programme itself should reflect in both its Presenter AND Content how ‘deference’ can be reinstated in a modern Britain, in which a flourishing entreprenarial liberal life styles can secure its noblest aspirations to rise beyond self approval and ascend to duty, which was at the heart of British culture of ‘world renown’ when most British people believed in the existence of a God and a third believed that God actually chose Elizabeth II to be our Queen, to whom many would happily and gloriously attribute as the personification of duty.
Here then is where perhaps the directional indication will lead to secure both the ‘Presenter and Contents’ of a new ‘Civilisation.’ To start at the top of the ladder will deny a ‘road map of ascension’ to exalt both Presenter and Content. The net should go back to the future and be cast at the time of theAccession of Elizabeth II, when deference was still felt in Britain, in which such a person from afar, as I from distant Cathay, whom has entered Britain at the bottom of the ladder and assimilated into its religious and secular culture as ascribed above, has the vision and competency to show how Christianity’s practise, its faith, at a minimum, is Theologically linked to its historic fixtures of secularism, at a premium, are an ‘enclosed unit’ both historically, theologically & philosophically, with immense Constitutional Conclusions. A new ‘Civilisation’ would create the impact of ‘Breaking News’ from a sound-bite to an unimaginable extended narrative.
This will exonerate accusations of reductionism in the BBC if in appropriating such a ‘Presenter’ to ascend to the personification of its Contents, (which is what Kenneth Clark achieved) but with immense latitude and brevity to circumvent Western Civilisation AND Christianity AS the REALISATION of the Eden of Genesis, in which Secularism amounts to 90% of Christianity’s conclusive message. I respectfully present myself as a carpenter at the bottom of this ladder with a hidden identity as a true 21st century Joseph, to interpret the above, which has the portent to secure this ‘road map of ascension’ to enlist me Constitutionally to High Office as the future Archbishop of Canterbury, Monarch and Pope to symbolisethe biblical Adam, on behalf of humanity. This new vista of ‘Civilisation’ will not only be about history, as it will be an iconic conduit in making history, for the benefit of humanity and ‘Triangulate’ upon a compassionate Creator.
Yours sincerely,
Thomas Faithful Darwood.
The following letters to the Prime Minister and Her Majesty the Queen were also sent to all the Bishops and the Lords, posted 1st class on the 6th April 2013 to arrive at their recipients on the 8th, in which the death of Baroness Margaret Thatcher was announced as endorsement of the integrity of these letters as pertains their TIMING.
